Night Light shifts your display toward warmer, lower-blue-light colors on a schedule you set, and most people turn it on once and never touch it again. The default settings are a reasonable starting point, but they're tuned for a generic user working generic hours — if your eyes are still tired by mid-afternoon or you're staring at a screen well past sunset, the stock configuration is probably leaving useful adjustments on the table.
Turning It On and Where the Real Controls Live
Night Light is under Settings → System → Display. There's a toggle to turn it on immediately, a strength slider, and a "Schedule night light" option that's off by default even though most people assume it's automatic. Without a schedule, Night Light only stays on until you manually turn it off or restart, which is why it can feel like it "doesn't work" for people who never opened the schedule menu.
- Set times manually if your schedule is consistent — say 8pm to 7am — rather than relying on sunset/sunrise, which drifts by over an hour across the year and won't match a schedule where you work nights or irregular hours.
- Use "Sunset to sunrise" only if your screen time roughly tracks daylight; Windows pulls this from your location setting, so it needs location services enabled for that display to be accurate.
- Adjust the strength slider well past the midpoint if you're using it in the evening. The default strength is mild enough that many users don't notice a difference and conclude the feature isn't doing anything.
What Night Light Actually Changes (and Doesn't)
Night Light reduces blue light output by warming the color temperature of everything on screen, which is why photos and video look yellowish while it's active — that's expected, not a bug. It does not dim your screen, reduce brightness, or reduce flicker; those are separate settings. If your eyes are tired because your screen is simply too bright for the room you're in, Night Light won't fix that on its own — you need to pair it with manual brightness adjustment for the room you're actually sitting in.
It's also worth knowing that Night Light is a display-wide filter, not a targeted fix for any specific symptom. - 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something roughly 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. This resets focus muscles that lock up during sustained close-range screen work.
- Match screen brightness to the room, not to a fixed number. A screen that looks fine in a bright office will feel harsh in a dim room at night, and vice versa — brightness that's too low forces your eyes to work harder to resolve contrast.
- Increase text size and contrast rather than leaning in toward the screen. Squinting at small text is a bigger contributor to strain for a lot of people than blue light ever is.
- Blink deliberately. Screen focus reduces blink rate significantly, which dries out the eyes faster than most people realize until it starts to sting.
Night Light vs Third-Party Tools
Before Night Light shipped natively, tools like f.lux did the same job and are still around for people who want more granular control — custom color temperatures below what Windows allows, per-app exceptions, or transition curves instead of an instant switch at a set time. For most people, though, the built-in version covers the same ground without installing anything extra, which matters if you're already trying to keep your startup programs list lean.
On Laptops vs External Monitors
Night Light applies per-display, and multi-monitor setups sometimes handle it inconsistently — some older or uncalibrated external monitors won't reflect the color shift as accurately as a laptop's built-in panel, since it depends on the display correctly receiving and applying the color profile Windows sends. If you've gone to the trouble of setting up a two-monitor workflow, check that Night Light looks consistent across both screens rather than assuming it's applying evenly, particularly if one monitor is several years older than the other.
Night Light is a genuinely useful default to leave on for evening work, but treat it as one adjustment among several rather than the fix for tired eyes. Pair it with a brightness level that matches the room, deliberate breaks, and text sized so you're not squinting, and the schedule you set once will keep quietly doing its job in the background.
