How to Use Windows Game Bar to Record and Check Performance

Windows has had a built-in recording and performance overlay for years, and it's easy to overlook because it's tucked behind a keyboard shortcut rather than a Start menu icon most people notice. Game Bar can capture clips, grab screenshots, and show real-time FPS and hardware usage — all without installing separate software, which covers a surprising number of everyday capture needs even outside of actual gaming.

Opening Game Bar

Press Windows key + G at any time to open the overlay. The first time, Windows may ask to confirm the active window is a "game" — this is just Game Bar's default framing and doesn't restrict what you can actually record; it works over most full-screen and windowed applications, not only games.

Recording a Clip

  • Windows key + Alt + R starts and stops recording instantly, without opening the full overlay — the fastest way to capture something as it happens.
  • Windows key + Alt + G saves the last 30 seconds (or whatever duration you've configured) retroactively — useful for capturing something unexpected that already happened, like a crash or a rare in-game event, without having needed to hit record beforehand.
  • Clips save automatically as .mp4 files under Videos → Captures, easy to find afterward without digging through the overlay.

Screenshots

Windows key + Alt + PrtScn captures a screenshot of the active window without opening any overlay at all, saved to the same Captures folder as video clips. This differs from the standard PrtScn or Windows key + Shift + S screenshot tools, which capture more general full-screen or custom-area shots — Game Bar's version is specifically tied to whatever app currently has focus.

Checking Performance in Real Time

Opening the full overlay (Windows key + G) shows a Performance widget with live CPU, GPU, memory, and FPS graphs, without needing any third-party monitoring overlay running in the background. This is genuinely useful for figuring out whether a game or app is CPU-bound or GPU-bound when performance feels off — if the GPU graph is maxed out while CPU has headroom, that points toward graphics settings as the fix; if CPU is maxed while GPU has room, lowering CPU-heavy settings or background processes matters more.

Pin the FPS counter separately. The Performance widget can be detached and kept visible as a small always-on-top overlay while you play or work, rather than needing to reopen the full Game Bar panel every time you want a quick performance check.

Adjusting Video Quality and Storage Use

Game Bar's settings (accessible from the overlay's gear icon, or Settings → Gaming → Captures) let you adjust recording resolution, frame rate, and bitrate — worth checking if clips are taking up more storage than expected, since the default settings favor quality over file size. Lowering the bitrate or resolution for casual clips you don't need in top quality can meaningfully cut down on how fast the Captures folder fills your drive, which matters if you're already watching what's eating your disk space.

When to Use Something Else Instead

Game Bar covers casual clips, quick performance checks, and screenshots well, but it's not built for longer recording sessions, multi-source streaming setups, or advanced editing — for anything beyond a quick clip, a dedicated screen recording tool built for longer or more complex capture is the better fit. Game Bar also doesn't record your full desktop or other windows in the background while a game is focused — it's scoped specifically to the active app, which is a limitation worth knowing before assuming it will capture everything happening on screen.

If Game Bar Won't Open

A common cause is Game Bar being disabled entirely in Settings → Gaming → Xbox Game Bar, sometimes turned off during a Windows update or a fresh install — flipping that toggle back on resolves the shortcut not responding. Another common cause is a specific app running in a mode Game Bar doesn't hook into properly (some older or unusually configured full-screen apps), where switching that app to windowed or borderless mode usually restores the overlay.

It's easy to forget Game Bar exists because nothing prompts you to use it, but for a quick clip of a bug, a screenshot of something on screen, or a fast performance check without installing anything new, the built-in shortcut is often faster than reaching for a separate app.
